College football is known for its competitive nature, where established programs often succeed and new contenders face challenges reaching the pinnacle. Despite this, last year’s win by the Indiana Hoosiers was a notable exception, showcasing the potential for fresh champions in the sport. As the new season approaches, many believe we might witness another newcomer clinching the national championship.
According to a poll conducted by The Athletic, featuring insights from 18 coaches, Oregon Ducks, led by coach Dan Lanning, are projected to top the college football scene. Six of these coaches chose Oregon as the favorite. Other teams received no more than three votes, while one coach abstained, confident about his own team’s prospects of winning, as reported by Bruce Feldman at The Athletic.
An offensive analyst within the ACC expressed, “I think this is the most wide-open race we’ve had in college football in such a long time. I’ll say Oregon. Dan Lanning has continued to improve, and this could be the year he breaks through.” Such optimism largely stems from quarterback Dante Moore, who emerged as a favorite for the Heisman Trophy, securing nine of the 18 votes in the poll. No other player received more than four votes.
A Big 12 team general manager remarked, “I’ll say Moore because he’s going to have numerous marquee games,” highlighting Moore’s potential impact on Oregon’s chances. Should Moore perform exceptionally or become a strong Heisman contender, Oregon would be poised to vie for their inaugural title once more.
Historically, Oregon finds itself in the national title conversation annually, yet obstacles often prevent their ultimate success. Last season, they faced defeat against the Hoosiers in the College Football Playoff, where Moore’s interception led to an early setback in a 56-22 loss. However, insiders express optimism that this year may present a different outcome for Oregon, with expectations of a more favorable season trajectory.
