Oliver Gilbert Wins Democratic Primary to Succeed Rep. Frederica Wilson

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Oliver Gilbert emerged victorious in the Democratic primary to succeed retiring Rep. Frederica Wilson in Congress. Gilbert is now poised to represent Florida’s 24th Congressional District, following Wilson’s enduring influence since her start in 2011.

The district, part of South Florida, includes sections of Miami and remains a Democratic stronghold, even after recent redistricting by Florida Republicans. This redistricting process moved areas like Miami Beach to a neighboring district.

Rep. Frederica Wilson is recognized for her distinctive style, prominently featuring brightly colored, wide-brimmed hats. Her departure triggered a competitive primary with seven candidates vying for the seat. Despite the fierce competition, the race didn’t feature dramatic clashes between establishment Democrats and far-left challengers, which have been common in the 2026 midterm elections.

Wilson supported Gilbert emphatically, urging constituents of District 24 to endorse him as well. House Democratic leaders have not intervened in the primary but are likely to unite behind Gilbert following his victory.

Elsewhere in Florida, far-left candidates, many associated with the Democratic Socialists of America, have presented formidable challenges. For instance, Oliver Larkin, a DSA member, ran against moderate Rep. Jared Moskowitz in a Republican-leaning district.

In a separate contest, socialist challenger Elijah Manley joined others in competing against Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Her candidacy has drawn attention due to her decision to run in a predominantly Black district following changes driven by the new congressional map.
