Northwest Indiana High School Baseball Teams Eye State Titles

As the postseason kicks off, several teams in Northwest Indiana are strong contenders for state titles. Among them are Crown Point, Chesterton, Andrean, and Kouts.

Duneland Athletic Conference Potential

The Duneland Athletic Conference (DAC) has seen its teams clench the Class 4A state title for the past two seasons. This year, Crown Point, Chesterton, and Valparaiso are contenders once again. Crown Point holds the highest DAC ranking in the state coaches poll at No. 3.

Coach Steve Strayer commented on their season, stating that after a strong start, the team hit a midseason slump but is now trending upwards. Key player Sean Dunlap, a Tennessee recruit, boasts impressive statistics, batting .471 with nine home runs and leading in various state rankings.

Chesterton’s Winning Streak

Ranked No. 4, Chesterton claimed the conference title for the first time since 2017. Coach John Bogner emphasized the importance of trusting their process in the tournament. Notable players include Rob Czarniecki and Troy Barrett, who have both had outstanding seasons.

Czarniecki is batting .495 with seven home runs and has excelled in other categories. Barrett, with a 10-0 record and 0.48 ERA, leads state victories and significantly contributes as a batter.

Valparaiso and Lake Central

Valparaiso, ranked No. 5, aims to repeat last year’s success with a strong infield combination of DJ Malloy and Trent Gill. Gill’s performance includes a .389 batting average with significant contributions in runs, homers, and stolen bases.

Lake Central participates in the Crown Point Sectional, facing No. 9 Munster. Key players like Brayden Walls demonstrate strong offensive skills, speaking to Lake Central’s competitive edge.

Andrean’s Record Pursuit

Andrean aims for its tenth state title, currently at the top of the Class 3A state poll. Returning coach Dave Pishkur leads a team that’s had a commendable season, despite two in-state losses.

Kouts: On a Winning Path

Kouts has sustained an impressive winning streak with 25 consecutive victories. Key players such as Billy Miller lead the team in batting and pitching, marking Kouts as a potent competitor in the Class 1A state championship.

Portage’s Potential

Portage aims for their first sectional title since 2013. A strong senior class drives their efforts, seeking to capitalize on their previous tournament successes. Coach Shane Prance highlights the seniors’ leadership and standard-setting in steering the program.
