NFL Joint Practice Scuffles and Fines Highlight Need for Player Accountability

Joint practices in the NFL have seen an increase in physical altercations. Most recently, the Miami Dolphins and New York Giants clashed, drawing attention to the need for better sportsmanship. Jameis Winston, a quarterback for the Dolphins, seemed to have sparked the incident after being physically targeted. Giants’ quarterback Jaxson Dart felt compelled to assist his teammate, saying, “I got to go help my boy! I don’t know what’s going on over there.”

Violence in these practices has led to significant penalties. Both the Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints received $500,000 fines after an intense brawl. The NFL has focused on promoting good conduct in recent years, yet fines against teams might not address the problem fully.

Recent incidents emphasize the need for fining players. The NFL Players Association and the league must consider this during training camp practices. Currently, players face fines for misconduct in official games, but joint practices lack such penalties.

Recent scuffles include:

  • The New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers on August 11
  • The Jaguars and Saints on August 13
  • The violent encounter between the Cowboys and Saints on August 18
  • Another altercation between the Jaguars and Panthers
  • Recent tensions between the Eagles and Patriots

Patriots coach Mike Vrabel has been vocal against fighting during practices. Despite his warnings, altercations persist, including a notable scuffle during the Bears and Bengals practice, sparked by a punch from Bears receiver Ray-Ray McCloud.

At Miami Gardens, multiple players from both the Giants and Dolphins were removed. The enforcement, however, is viewed by some as more of a break than a punishment. Fines aimed at clubs might not be sufficient to deter players from emotional reactions.

The NFL’s action on Thursday signifies progress. But if player behavior in joint practices is to change, the issue must be addressed by holding individuals financially accountable. As the league monitors player conduct during official games, it should apply similar protocols to joint practices.
