Recently, after discussions with his legal advisors, Mamdani announced that he lacks the authority to execute his original plan. Legal constraints, stemming from federal law, prevent local officials from carrying out such an international arrest. These limitations have led Mamdani to reconsider his stance despite his initial intentions.
The ICC does not hold jurisdiction in the United States, meaning U.S. officials, including those at the state and municipal levels, are not empowered to enforce ICC warrants. This legal complexity underscores the difficulties faced by local leaders aiming to align with international legal bodies without the necessary jurisdictional authority.
