The New York gubernatorial race escalated on Tuesday as Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul and Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman exchanged criticisms during a debate. The discussion addressed controversial topics such as President Donald Trump, a recent ICE-related shooting, and inflation concerns.
Dispute Over ICE Conduct
The debate opened with questions about the conduct of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Recently, an operation in the Bronx led to the shooting of a 28-year-old Dominican national, prompting New York City outrage. During this event, a 5-year-old boy in Oscar Bergal’s vehicle remained unharmed.
Blakeman criticized Hochul for supporting the release of a convicted individual involved in the incident. He emphasized Hochul’s role in labeling the state as a sanctuary, asserting that this allowed criminals to remain and endanger communities.
“Kathy Hochul appealed to ICE to let this criminal out. The question New Yorkers must ask is why this person was in New York initially,” Blakeman stated.
He argued New York’s sanctuary policies hinder effective cooperation between local law enforcement and ICE. In contrast, he claimed that Nassau County successfully deported over 2,000 illegal immigrants with criminal records due to their cooperative approach.
Hochul responded by accusing Blakeman of failing to condemn ICE’s actions. She criticized ICE for its aggressive tactics, stating that law enforcement should prioritize careful evaluation during arrests to prevent endangering innocent lives.
“So he basically says in the New York, he’d be fine if ICE agents shoot into cars,” Hochul argued.
Blakeman countered that such events result from Hochul’s sanctuary policies, asserting they invite crime and prevent effective collaboration with federal law enforcement.
Debate on Trump and Economy
The debate also covered Trump and economic issues. Hochul attacked Blakeman’s association with Trump, attributing rising energy and grocery costs to policies enacted under Trump’s influence.
“He promised to cut energy costs… Everything has happened under your friend, Donald Trump,” Hochul remarked.
Blakeman dismissed repeated references to Trump, pointing out Hochul’s governance record, which he claimed involves high taxes and increased utility rates. He defended his relationship with Trump, alongside endorsements from supporters like Bonnie Lautenberg and actor Debra Messing as evidence of his bipartisan appeal.
“Donald Trump is my friend. He’s endorsed me. But so is Bonnie Lautenberg, a liberal Democrat,” Blakeman stated.
Hochul referenced Blakeman’s limited support, highlighting her own wider range of backers. The debate underscored significant policy differences and varied perspectives on handling immigration and economic issues in New York State.
