The upcoming gubernatorial election in Nevada is shaping up to be highly competitive. Democratic Attorney General Aaron Ford is set to challenge Republican incumbent Governor Joe Lombardo this November. According to The Associated Press, Ford secured his position as the Democratic nominee after defeating five other candidates, with a campaign targeting Lombardo’s handling of issues like rising living costs.
Ford has been critical of Lombardo’s tenure, linking the governor to former President Trump, who endorsed Lombardo. Trump’s popularity in Nevada has waned since his narrow victory in the state two years ago, adding pressure to Lombardo’s campaign. The Cook Political Report labels the race as a toss-up, signifying a tight contest.
Governor Lombardo overcame six primary challengers, bolstered by legislative successes despite Democratic dominance in the legislature. His achievements include enhancing school accountability, adjusting criminal justice reforms post-2020, and facilitating efforts for affordable housing. Lombardo was instrumental in securing public financing for a Major League Baseball stadium, which now serves as a significant legislative highlight.
Although Lombardo’s campaign funds provide an advantage, voter engagement and strategic messaging are crucial. Ford benefits from the endorsement of the influential Culinary Union, representing hospitality workers with around 60,000 members in Nevada. This union actively drives voter turnout, using polling sites within casinos and resorts to reach hospitality workers effectively.
