Netflix Purchases ‘Hot Ones’ Spinoff to Rival YouTube

Netflix is expanding its content with a new addition: a spinoff of the popular ‘Hot Ones’ interview series on YouTube. Known for its unique format involving celebrities eating spicy chicken wings, ‘Hot Ones’ is hosted by Sean Evans and has gained a substantial following.

The new iteration, titled ‘Hot Ones: Extra Heat,’ will be available on Netflix immediately following prominent live sporting events or major series and film premieres. The premiere episode is set to air on July 13, coinciding with the conclusion of the Home Run Derby, part of the Major League Baseball All-Star competition.

This move highlights Netflix’s competition with YouTube, the most-watched streaming service in the U.S. according to Nielsen, with Netflix following closely behind. Netflix has previously partnered with YouTube creators like Ms. Rachel and Mark Rober to broaden its appeal and attract diverse audiences.

Sean Evans indicates that while ‘Hot Ones: Extra Heat’ maintains the series’ core elements—the celebrity interviews and fiery chicken wings—it will also feature larger production values and greater spectacle. The format includes the familiar spicy wing challenge with famous personalities, lasting around 30 minutes per episode.

A larger budget allows Netflix to shift the show’s setting from the familiar studio backdrop to new locations. The premiere episode will be hosted at a college baseball stadium, providing a fresh and dynamic environment for the series.
