The interview clip has surfaced again, eliciting reactions from figures such as Harris Faulkner and Lara Trump, who criticized his evasive response.
At a rally in Grand Rapids, El-Sayed humorously criticized CNN, commenting, “I go on CNN every once in a while and I get a non-consensual colonoscopy,” which was met with laughter from attendees.
He expressed that CNN focuses too much on foreign discussions, suggesting that there is a cost to sending resources elsewhere, restricting what could benefit locally.
In an earlier appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” El-Sayed was questioned by Jake Tapper about leaked audio where he refrained from commenting on the death of Iranian Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to avoid offending constituents.
El-Sayed shifted focus to U.S. servicemembers killed by Iranian strikes in Jordan, avoiding direct answers on his previous comments.
El-Sayed is gathering significant progressive support for his Senate bid in Michigan.
“Look, let’s have a conversation based in Michigan. I’m running for Senate in Michigan,”El-Sayed told Tapper.
Tapper pursued clarity on remarks referring to the potential to offend people in Dearborn, Michigan.
El-Sayed recently sparred with CNN anchor Kasie Hunt over erased social media posts about defunding the police, accusing CNN of prioritizing “clickbait” over voter-centric issues.
Endorsed by progressives like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, El-Sayed is facing a contentious primary against Michigan Rep. Haley Stevens.
