Michael Kim achieved a historic milestone on Friday at the 3M Open. The 33-year-old golfer was on the brink of recording just the 16th sub-60 round in PGA Tour history as he approached the 18th hole. His exceptional wedge shot left him 24 feet from making a birdie on the par-5, 18th hole, putting him close to a memorable feat.
Standing over the putt, Kim focused on one thing: ensuring he didn’t leave it short. His determination paid off as he confidently sank the putt, celebrating with several enthusiastic fist pumps.
I tend to leave those short when it’s that uphill and I just, last thing was just get it there, just don’t leave it short,Kim reflected after his round.
Kim was well aware of the stakes during the final holes and aimed to secure his place in the history books with precision and skill.
I just kind of told myself like, ‘Hey, this is the way, this is the moment to get into the history books and let’s go for it, let’s not try to luck our way into it, let’s try to step up and hit some really good shots,’he explained.
His round included remarkable runs, beginning with five consecutive birdies starting at the third hole. He then made par on the eighth before claiming birdies on three of the following four holes, culminating with four straight birdies to finish. Notably, eight of his 11 birdies came from over 10 feet.
When you hit a putt and it does exactly what you kind of envisioned before you hit it, it’s an awesome feeling. Felt like that all day out there,Kim shared.
Kim ended his day with a three-shot lead over Ben Kohles. Despite the successful round, Kim acknowledged the tournament was far from over.
Today was an awesome day, but still, I’m only halfway there so still need to kind of get focused up for the weekend,he stated.
Kim’s 59 is only the fourth instance on tour since 2024. Jake Knapp was the last to achieve this during the 2025 Cognizant Classic, while Jim Furyk holds the tour record with a 58 at the 2016 Travelers Championship.
