Before the Giants and the Dallas Cowboys faced off on Sunday Night Football, MetLife Stadium paid tribute to the victims and first responders of the September 11 attacks for its 25th anniversary. The pregame ceremony featured meaningful gestures to honor those affected.
Fans arriving at the stadium encountered FDNY’s ceremonial Ladder 343 truck alongside a steel beam from the World Trade Center, displayed by the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Two columns of light, reminiscent of the World Trade Center’s ‘Tribute in Light,’ lit up the night sky above the stadium.
The ceremony included a moving performance of the national anthem by members of the NYPD and FDNY. On the field, players, coaches, and Giants season-ticket holders held a massive American flag spanning 100 yards.
In a special moment, New York City first responders formed a gauntlet for the Giants during player introductions. Both teams stood on the sidelines wearing NYPD, FDNY, and PAPD hats, while warming up in ‘Never Forget’ T-shirts.
Members of the Palumbo family, who lost their FDNY father on 9/11, served as honorary captains for the game’s coin toss. A poignant photo montage of lives lost played on the stadium’s video boards during a moment of silence.
Giants legends joined first responders for the iconic ‘Go Big Blue’ chant before kickoff.
New Giants coach John Harbaugh, who previously served 18 seasons in Baltimore, emphasized the significance of the tribute, stating, “It’s a story about heroes who were willing to run toward danger.” Harbaugh expressed pride in honoring the heroes with effort and action.
The team, now led by Harbaugh, looks forward to promising prospects. Service members saluted the flag during the anthem, standing in solidarity with all who are remembered.
