Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson Share Wild Friendship Stories

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson’s close friendship has led to many wild situations. While promoting their new show, Brothers, the actors shared several memorable anecdotes from their long-standing relationship.

Late-night Surprises

McConaughey recounted a time Harrelson unexpectedly joined him in bed. During an appearance on the “Glass Half Full” podcast, he explained that Harrelson had never used a front door or sent a message to make plans. “We hadn’t seen each other for a year,” McConaughey shared. “At 2 a.m., Woody was in bed with us!” Harrelson remarked, “What a good way to wake up a friend and be next to Camila [Alves, McConaughey’s wife].”

Anniversary Confusion

Another story involved their differing accounts of their first meeting. McConaughey recalled they started taking shots together at 1 p.m. Harrelson recalled, “I met him and said, ‘Hey, let’s do a shot,’ to which he replied he had work. I said, ‘One shot’s gonna stop you from all the work you got?'” McConaughey admitted, “I don’t remember meeting that day.”

Living on the Edge

McConaughey once saw Harrelson perform a handstand 18 inches from the Grand Canyon’s edge. “The stuff this guy pulls off because he didn’t know better is still amazing,” McConaughey noted. Despite Harrelson’s downplaying, McConaughey emphasized, “The photographer freaks out. Never got a picture of it, but it would have been the most epic shot.”

Vacation Antics

Harrelson also invited strangers to join them on vacation. During an interview with Conan O’Brien, McConaughey recounted how Harrelson met a couple at the airport in Greece and invited them to stay in their rental. McConaughey shared his surprise, saying, “We show up, and there’s two people… ‘We met Woody at the airport.'” Harrelson told him, “They’re great, man. They’re going to be with us for a week.”

Unannounced Visits

McConaughey expanded on Harrelson’s habit of dropping by unannounced. “He never comes through a front door,” McConaughey said. Harrelson would often stay for months, making McConaughey’s home his own. “I’m like, ‘Man, Woody, I need some space,’ but my family says, ‘No, don’t let Woody go.'”

Potential Family Ties

In their new show, they explore a storyline where they might be brothers—a concept that has grounding in real-life events. During a trip to Greece, McConaughey’s mother mentioned, “Woody, I knew your dad,” leading to speculation. Harrelson explained on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” that McConaughey’s mother’s story implied a connection. While Harrelson is open to a DNA test, McConaughey hesitates, feeling he might lose a father.
