Maryland First State to Ban Real-Time Price Changes in Grocery Stores

Maryland has implemented a new law prohibiting grocery stores from employing electronic pricing tools to change food item prices within a single day. The decision, announced by key state leaders in January, aims to prevent potential unfair price manipulation by retailers.

House Speaker Del. Joseline A. Peña-Melnyk of Prince George’s County, Governor Wes Moore, and Senate President Bill Ferguson of Baltimore City introduced the initiative earlier this year. This legislative move addresses growing concerns about the impact of rising costs on households. Critics feared that real-time pricing could lead to price exploitation, making daily necessities even less affordable.

The law’s advocates argue that stabilizing grocery prices during the day protects consumers from unexpected hikes. This state-wide policy positions Maryland as a pioneer in consumer protection at a time when families face economic pressures.
