A Maryland couple has been arrested following the death of their 2-month-old daughter, Aida Mikea Monzon Alvarado. She suffered severe head injuries that were allegedly caused by what the father described as ‘Satan slamming a door on the child.’
Oscar Pineda and Katerin Monzon-Alvarado, both 21, are facing several charges including first and second-degree child abuse, assault, and reckless endangerment. These charges could result in a maximum sentence of 55 years. Baltimore Police indicate that additional homicide charges may be considered based on the final autopsy report.
The infant was brought to Harbor Hospital with severe bruising around her eyes and jawline, which doctors considered ‘suspicious.’ Further examination disclosed significant head trauma, multiple skull fractures, and brain injuries. Initially, these were not detected.
At a court hearing, a prosecutor argued that the girl’s injuries were too extensive to be caused by a single fall, as suggested by the mother. The prosecutor dismissed the father’s claim of a supernatural cause as implausible.
The baby’s mother had taken her to the hospital when she became unresponsive. She initially stated that the baby became unresponsive after being fed and lying face down in bed. The mother also reported that her 2-year-old son frequently jumps on the bed, leading to the baby falling.
The couple later admitted to seeing the girl’s bruises on September 6 and witnessing her vomiting the next day. They failed to seek medical care until she became unresponsive.
Both parents are identified as Guatemalan nationals. Prosecutors allege they pose a significant flight risk, leading to their detention without bail.
