Democrat Mary Peltola, a former congresswoman, is challenging incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan in a tight race centered on economic concerns and political influences. Peltola is linking Sullivan to Republican policies she claims have exacerbated living costs.
Impact of High Prices
In Bethel, Alaska, a remote city in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, everyday essentials are incredibly expensive. A pound of tomatoes is priced at nearly $7, while milk costs over $13 per gallon, when available. Such high costs force most residents to rely on hunting or fishing to supplement their food supply, as grocery expenses are prohibitive for many.
Federal Aid and Political Context
Federal aid and policies are also key issues in this election. Peltola argues that the current economic strategies under Republican leadership aren’t addressing the root of the economic struggles faced by Alaskans.
The Role of Donald Trump
Another element of this political contest is the influence of former President Donald Trump. His policies and support shape the Republican stance, impacting voter sentiment and decision-making processes.
