Mark Ruffalo Responds to Antisemitism Allegations

Actor and activist Mark Ruffalo has addressed claims that his criticism of the Ellison family’s proposed Warner Bros. Discovery merger was antisemitic. In a statement to Fox News Digital, Ruffalo stated, “The accusation that I am antisemitic is appalling and fundamentally dishonest.”

Ruffalo emphasized that criticizing actions such as those of the Israeli prime minister, military technology contracts, or the executives involved is not equivalent to attacking Jewish people. He clarified, “This critical and necessary dialogue is then dishonestly framed as being anti-Israel. My views stem from my own political convictions and should not be interpreted as hostility toward Jewish people, whom I deeply love and respect.” He highlighted the influence of his Jewish friends and colleagues throughout his life, emphasizing their importance in his work and activism.

The criticism came after Paramount accused Ruffalo of invoking “antisemitic tropes” in what was described as a corporate dispute. This followed Ruffalo’s reposting of video remarks by Paramount board member Safra Catz, discussing Oracle’s technology aiding the Israeli military after the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023. Ruffalo’s critical comments included concerns over Oracle’s involvement in the Warner Bros. acquisition.

Ruffalo’s remarks prompted a response from Paramount, stating they were “troubled when antisemitic tropes are invoked in purported service of a business dispute.” They emphasized that words like “genocide” and “apartheid” used in this context are inappropriate and diminish the severity of these terms.

Mark Ruffalo further elaborated on his stance, discussing the broader consequences of the merger, which could affect many people and potentially impact the country. He said that examining the Ellisons, Oracle’s business, and the potential threats to editorial freedom and livelihoods is necessary.

The merger in question is backed by $111 billion and could give one family control over major media networks like CNN, HBO, and Warner Bros. Ruffalo and others have raised concerns about foreign money’s influence, calling for a thorough national security review. Until regulators provide satisfactory answers, Ruffalo argues the merger should be halted.

A coalition of 12 state attorneys general is challenging the merger, delaying its closure until June 1, 2027, or following a court decision on the states’ claims.
