Maine Democrats Rally Behind Troy Jackson for Senate Race Against Susan Collins

Maine Democrats have sidestepped a potentially divisive primary battle with Troy Jackson emerging as the party’s Senate nominee. Former state Senate President Jackson received overwhelming support, leading his main competitors to withdraw and unite the party behind him. Former Maine Democratic Party Chair Bev Uhlenhake noted a sense of relief within the party, emphasizing the excitement for the challenges ahead.

Former Portland Mayor Ethan Strimling acknowledged the tough road ahead but views Jackson as a strong contender to unseat Susan Collins, the current Senate Appropriations Committee chair. He highlighted the need for significant resources and grassroots mobilization, including door-knocking and phone calls, to mount a successful campaign.

Jackson shares much of Graham Platner’s working-class populist platform, which helps retain Platner’s base. His blue-collar background as a former logger adds to his relatability. Despite lacking Platner’s charisma, Democrats believe this does not hinder his political potential, as Uhlenhake mentioned.

Having narrowly missed the Democratic gubernatorial nomination earlier, Jackson is an established figure in Maine politics. His campaign faces scrutiny, with past reports suggesting a difficult temperament. Jackson’s campaign adviser addressed concerns, acknowledging past instances of frustration but clarifying they stemmed from his passion for issues.

Although Maine leans Democratic, Collins has consistently been a formidable opponent. She has leveraged her position to advocate for federal funding for Maine, strengthening her electoral position. Jackson’s prior electoral performance indicates his appeal across party lines, outperforming former President Biden in his district by 15 percentage points in 2020. However, Collins still managed to secure a significant victory over her Democratic rival during the same period.

Geoffrey Skelley of Decision Desk HQ highlighted the importance of winning over voters who supported both Collins and Biden in 2020. This demographic could be pivotal in determining the election’s outcome. Despite Collins’s fundraising lead, Skelley pointed out her vulnerabilities in the current political climate.

Campaign Conditions

The race against Susan Collins carries crucial implications for Democratic control of the Senate. While Collins’s political longevity provides her with an advantage, the race remains competitive and could tip either way.

The election is pivotal for shaping the Senate’s future, with both parties keenly aware of its significance. Democrats must rally their statewide resources to challenge a seasoned incumbent like Collins effectively. Experts note that voter partisanship will play a major role, and persuading swing voters remains critical.
