The Arizona Cardinals recently faced a significant change in their roster. Tight end Travis Vokolek declared his retirement from professional football at the age of 28. The decision stems from a serious neck injury he sustained during a match against the Indianapolis Colts.
During a kickoff play, Vokolek was blocking when he landed awkwardly after a collision with a Colts player. This incident required him to be stretchered off the field, marking an abrupt halt to his playing days.
“After numerous visits with doctors and neurologists over the past couple of months, I have been advised to medically retire from the NFL due to a serious neck injury that I suffered this past season,”
Vokolek shared in a heartfelt message on social media. He expressed his gratitude for fulfilling his childhood dream of playing football at the highest level, despite his career spanning only three years.
Vokolek also thanked his teammates, coaches, trainers, the Cardinals’ staff, and his wife for their unwavering support during this challenging time. He credited football with teaching him invaluable life lessons and creating unforgettable memories.
His college football journey included time with Rutgers and Nebraska before going pro. Vokolek initially joined the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent in 2023, though he did not play with the team.
In December 2023, Vokolek signed with the Arizona Cardinals, participating in eight games. Yet, he never became a significant part of the team’s offense.
