Macklemore Removed from Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour After Remarks

Rapper Macklemore has been removed from the remaining US dates of Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour. The decision came after backlash over pro-Palestinian remarks he made onstage. In a statement on Instagram, Macklemore alleged that Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, influenced the decision by pressuring stadium owners to exclude him.

Macklemore, whose real name is Ben Haggerty, shared that Sheeran told him Kraft objected to him performing at Gillette Stadium. Kraft’s influence reportedly extended to other stadiums, leading to an ultimatum against Macklemore’s continued participation in the tour.

The rapper detailed conversations with Sheeran, calling their 13-year friendship significant. Sheeran expressed concerns about the crowd’s reaction to Macklemore’s message of ‘Free Palestine’ and the display of a Palestinian flag. Sheeran maintained a public stance of neutrality, which Macklemore challenged.

Macklemore emphasized that neither he, Sheeran, nor singer Pink, who also criticized his remarks, should be seen as victims. Instead, he pointed to the hardships faced by Palestinians, highlighting the loss of over 20,000 children in Gaza.

He observed that neutrality during such conflicts can incur costs, such as losing opportunities and relationships. Macklemore focused on the imbalance where one side has considerable military and financial backing.

He spoke out against using accusations of antisemitism to silence criticism of Israeli policies. Macklemore believes such tactics deflect accountability rather than protect Jewish individuals.

Macklemore remains reflective on his bond with Sheeran, expressing hope for future dialogue and understanding between them. He reiterated his commitment to raising awareness and speaking out for Palestinian rights.
