Luigi Mangione has pleaded guilty to federal charges related to the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, as defense attorneys work to dismiss state murder charges in New York. Former prosecutor Nancy Grace appeared on ‘Fox & Friends Weekend’ to discuss these legal maneuvers.
Roxane Gay, a Rutgers University professor and artist-in-residence at Harvard Medical School, called for Mangione’s release during a panel about fatness and healthcare. Her remarks were made at a Harvard event focusing on healthcare treatment of overweight patients.
Gay criticized the health insurance industry as ‘equal opportunity evil’ and admitted to using concierge medicine to access healthcare, a move she described as ‘throwing money at the problem.’ She noted Mangione’s mental health issues, arguing that a carceral setting might not address these problems effectively.
Mangione, who is charged with several crimes in New York, including murder and weapons charges, pleaded guilty on August 14 to federal stalking charges resulting in death. He is set for sentencing on December 18, facing a possible life sentence, with his state case still pending.
In a statement, Gay condemned the murder of Thompson and criticized the justice system’s focus on punishment over rehabilitation. She expressed hope for a healthcare system restructured to prioritize patient care over insurance profits, potentially evolving into a single-payer system like those in other countries.
The remarks led to Gay receiving threats, illustrating risks faced by public figures in contentious debates. Harvard University stated that speaker views do not represent institutional positions. Fox News sought comments from Rutgers University but received no immediate response.
