Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles: A Glimpse into a Unique Collection

George Lucas, creator of “Star Wars,” has described his Lucas Museum of Narrative Art as a “temple to the people’s art.” This ambitious project, nearly two decades in the making, will finally open its doors to the public in Los Angeles. Located in Exposition Park near the University of Southern California, the $1 billion museum is a collaborative effort between Lucas and his wife, Mellody Hobson. The museum houses a diverse range of artworks, primarily from their personal collection.

Star Wars Legacy

Lucas, aged 82, relishes accomplishing the seemingly impossible. Initially planned for San Francisco and Chicago, the museum’s design reached early phases in both cities before facing setbacks. The Los Angeles site now blends works from popular painters, illustrators, and comic artists with fine art. Among the must-see exhibits are life-size Star Wars props and characters.

On the museum grounds, visitors will find sculptures, including one of Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia. This sculpture, “The Hutt Slayer,” depicts the iconic moment from “Return of the Jedi” where Leia defeats Jabba the Hutt. The “Star Wars in Motion” exhibition showcases vehicles from both the original and prequel trilogies.

Modern Art Highlights

The museum features paintings from classic artists like Norman Rockwell and appealing works from contemporary creators. One notable gallery on the fifth floor contains murals by British street artist Banksy. These murals, which were included through collaborations with Lucas, add a modern touch to the museum’s collection.

Nearby, works by Judith Baca and Diego Rivera emphasize social activism, providing a vibrant contrast to the traditional pieces. Visitors should also explore the museum’s architecture, which includes a central oculus described by architect Ma Yansong as “almost like a spiritual space,” enhancing the emotional experience.

Renowned Artworks

Among the impressive displays, a self-portrait by Frida Kahlo is a standout piece. Acquired in 2020, this portrait is dedicated to Dr. Leo Eloesser, a friend and physician who supported Kahlo. The artwork, “Autorretrato Dedicado al Dr. Eloesser,” holds significant importance for Kahlo enthusiasts.

Adding to the museum’s eclectic mix, Cassius Marcellus Coolidge’s 1894 “Poker Game” finds a place among high art. Known for its depiction of dogs playing cards, “Poker Game” is celebrated as both kitsch and highbrow art in the gallery.
