College baseball teams have noticed Valparaiso pitcher Lucas Haas, especially since last summer’s performances. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 195 pounds, Haas impresses with a fastball reaching 91 mph and an exceptional spin rate.
“I attended the Future Games last summer before the recruiting window opened,” Haas said.
When the recruitment period began on August 1, Haas experienced a flood of interest from various schools. The pace slowed during the fall, but some schools maintained contact, and interest surged again after his recent high school season.
During his junior season, Haas excelled with a record of 6-2, a 2.58 ERA, and 66 strikeouts over 46 innings. His impressive performance with the Class 4A sectional champion Vikings, who held a 23-8 record, caught the attention of Indiana, Notre Dame, and Purdue. However, Cincinnati emerged as the standout program for Haas.
“I focused on Cincinnati after my first visit and kept them in mind through winter and my high school season,” he said.
On July 8, Haas committed to the Bearcats, who have made consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances under coach Jordan Bischel.
“I felt the coaches would develop me,” Haas explained. He anticipated making a difference as a freshman and helping the team significantly.
Committing before his senior year looks promising for Haas, who earned All-Duneland Athletic Conference honors. Valparaiso coach Todd Evans believes Haas has high ambitions.
“He aims to be an all-state pitcher. Lucas wants us to win sectional, regional, semistate, and more,” Evans said.
Evans praised Haas for his competitive spirit, likening him to a “bulldog” on the field.
“I’m definitely a hard worker,” Haas said. “I strive to surpass others and, if given a chance, I’ll prove difficult to take off the field.”
Haas’ father, Ryan, encourages his son to remain committed.
“Don’t slow down,” Ryan Haas advised. “Committing doesn’t guarantee success. Lucas must keep pushing to achieve his bigger goals.”
Lucas Haas plans to enjoy his senior season while staying competitive.
“I want a state run with my teammates and intend to enjoy my final year,” he said.
Looking ahead, Haas is eager to join Cincinnati.
“I’m excited to meet the team, build connections, and focus on winning,” he stated.
