Glover explained that he had worn spikes for 23 years on the PGA Tour. He mentioned that before, players couldn’t tap down spike marks, but that changed recently. He took off his shoes to avoid causing marks on the green, as players can now tap down such marks.
The PGA Tour confirmed that Glover was asked to be “mindful” of his spike marks. His metal spikes could easily leave marks on the soft, bent grass greens of the 3M Open, prompting this thoughtful gesture.
In his Instagram statement, Glover shared insights into the occurrence. He noted that it was the first complaint he received about his spikes. He was approached by an official during the round, not a fellow player. Glover pointed out that other players also wore metal spikes, and the greens were soft due to watering.
Glover emphasized several times that players are now allowed to tap down spike marks. His shoe removal wasn’t a protest but a practical choice to prevent damage around the hole.
He expressed disappointment that this incident drew attention away from fellow competitor Jackson Koivin. Glover looked forward to his next event, The Rocket Classic, where he planned to continue wearing metal spikes.
