A man from Louisiana has been charged with murder following the death of a deputy U.S. marshal. The incident occurred while serving an arrest warrant, according to federal officials.
Clarence A. Frazier Jr., 48, from Alexandria, reportedly barricaded himself in his home. When law enforcement officers arrived to serve a warrant related to a previous sexual battery charge, he allegedly opened fire. This information comes from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Louisiana.
Frazier faces murder charges for killing a federal officer. If convicted, he could receive a life sentence or the death penalty.
Authorities identified the deceased deputy U.S. marshal as Drew Hanson. An official statement described him as a committed husband, father, and son.
“The alleged actions of the defendant have unfortunately claimed the life of a dedicated law enforcement officer performing his duties,” said Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche. He added that the suspect is now in custody and will face legal consequences.
The shooting took place on July 13. Officers from the U.S. Marshals Service and Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office had found Frazier at his residence and obtained a search warrant for the property.
Federal documents reveal that Frazier failed to attend state court for a trial on charges of sexual battery involving a person with infirmities.
Law enforcement officials announced themselves before forcing entry into Frazier’s home. He allegedly barricaded himself inside a bedroom, shooting at the officers and hitting Hanson.
After a prolonged standoff, authorities detained Frazier. Deputy Hanson later succumbed to his gunshot injuries.
