Week 3 of the 2026 NFL season has arrived, and team dynamics are becoming clearer. Some squads are stepping up as potential playoff contenders, while others need significant changes. The Los Angeles Chargers fall into the latter category, as noted by future Pro Football Hall of Famer Rob Gronkowski.
During an event in New York City, Gronkowski shared his perspective on the Chargers’ unexpected struggles. He pointed out that while the Miami Dolphins also faced challenges, their issues were anticipated due to roster concerns. The Chargers, however, were expected to fare better under head coach Jim Harbaugh and new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel.
The Chargers’ disappointing start includes an 0-2 record after matches against the Arizona Cardinals and Las Vegas Raiders, which few expected to be serious contenders. Gronkowski highlighted the team’s current state: “That’s a mess over there right now,” he said, emphasizing the need for improvements in the offensive line to protect quarterback Justin Herbert.
This team was projected to be a contender for the Super Bowl, boosted by McDaniel’s offensive strategies. Yet, they have averaged just 14 points per game, ranking third-lowest in the league. Their offense is also 23rd in total yards per game. Herbert’s performances have been below expectations, with only two touchdown passes, three interceptions, and a completion rate of 59.3%.
Gronkowski stressed that the blame should not rest solely on Herbert. He pointed out several issues, including the offensive coordinator’s decisions, the line’s protection, and receivers failing to make key plays. “It’s a collective of everything,” he noted, insisting that improvements must come from the entire team.
Despite only being two games into the season, the Chargers have a challenging schedule ahead. They will face the Buffalo Bills, Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Rams, Houston Texans, and Baltimore Ravens in upcoming weeks.
