Little Debbie’s Oatmeal Creme Pie began as a modest 5-cent snack during the Great Depression, transforming into a beloved item over 90 years. Introduced in 1935 by O.D. McKee, this snack cake, crafted from the back of his 1928 Whippet car, marked the inception of the Little Debbie name according to company history.
The McKee family purchased a bakery near Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1934, using their car as collateral. The financial strain was such that they had to use a sheet as living quarters in the bakery.
By the 1960s, the brand was established under the name of McKee’s granddaughter, Little Debbie. Oatmeal Creme Pies were the pioneering snack cake of the brand. The combination of whole grain oats, molasses, and crème filling created a hit that persisted over decades.
The first family packs included the Oatmeal Creme Pie, priced at 49 cents per carton. Within 10 months of introduction, over 14 million cakes sold. By 1964, 14 distinct varieties including Nutty Buddy wafer bars and Swiss Cake Roll emerged.
McKee Foods, headquartered in Tennessee, today boasts its status as America’s largest family bakery, maintaining more than 75 Little Debbie products. Oatmeal Creme Pies, Swiss Rolls, and Nutty Buddy wafer bars are their most popular items, with over 200 million cartons sold annually.
Debbie McKee-Fowler, a member of the fourth generation, chairs the McKee Foods Board of Directors. The family-run nature of the company preserves its foundational values and offers products enjoyed by diverse generations.
The nostalgic flavor of spiced cookies combined with a sweet crème middle appeals to both older and younger consumers. The Oatmeal Creme Pie is associated with fond memories, epitomized by stories such as a customer remembering fishing trips with his grandfather.
