Kennywood Implements Stricter Chaperone Policy Amid Nationwide Park Incidents

Kennywood, a historic amusement park near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is tightening its chaperone policy this summer. This decision comes amid reports of violent altercations and rowdy teen behavior at parks across the nation.

New Policy Details

Starting June 12, guests aged 15 and under must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult during all operating hours. This policy will be in effect until September 7. According to the park’s statement, the aim is to maintain the park’s family-friendly atmosphere.

Recent incidents, like the brawl involving around 100 people at Six Flags St. Louis on opening day, highlight the need for such measures. Similarly, Hersheypark in Pennsylvania faced a significant brawl on April 3, involving 55 people.

Enforcement and Requirements

Kennywood requires that chaperones be at least 21 years old and present a valid government-issued ID. Each chaperone may accompany up to six minors. While chaperones must remain inside the park, they do not need to stay physically with the children at all times.

The updated rules extend the previous summer chaperone policy from a start time of 4 p.m. to full-day enforcement. The age requirement has also been lowered from 17 to 15.

Response to Nationwide Concerns

Across the U.S., “teen takeovers” have been causing disruptions in public spaces. These gatherings, often spurred by social media, can lead to fights and arrests.

Hersheypark recently introduced photo reentry verification after disruptions during its opening weekend. Kennywood’s policy aims to prevent similar issues by enforcing rules at both entry and throughout the park. Unaccompanied minors may face removal.

Organized group events at the park already have chaperone practices and are exempt from this new policy.

“This was a proactive measure to preserve our welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere,” a Kennywood spokesperson stated.

The policy has received approval online, with many praising the proactive stance.

Park Characteristics

Located in West Mifflin, about 10 miles from Pittsburgh, Kennywood opened in 1898. It is one of only two U.S. amusement parks recognized as a National Historic Landmark, the other being Rye Playland in New York. Kennywood remains a beloved destination known for its iconic rides and culinary offerings, such as its Potato Patch fries.

To enhance safety, all guests must pass through a weapons detection system. Only bags up to 15 inches in size are allowed, with exceptions for medical and diaper bags.
