President Donald Trump has put forward Keith Sonderling, the acting Labor Secretary, for the permanent position. Sonderling has effectively been managing the department in an acting capacity.
Trump’s initial choice for Labor Secretary, former Republican congresswoman Lori Chavez-DeRemer, resigned after just over a year. Her departure followed allegations involving civil rights violations and an inappropriate relationship with an employee, alongside reports of her frequent absences from office. Chavez-DeRemer has denied these allegations.
