Karine Jean-Pierre, a former White House press secretary, expressed concerns in a guest essay published in The New York Times. She highlighted that President Donald Trump was repeating communication errors similar to those of her former boss, President Joe Biden.
Jean-Pierre noted that President Biden aimed to showcase his domestic policies, which he believed were beneficial. However, there was a gap between the optimistic economic news and the public’s daily struggles with high prices for groceries, rent, child care, and gas. This disconnect influenced public discussions.
She mentioned the importance of acknowledging people’s real-life experiences when crafting messages. Jean-Pierre observed that an outdated communication strategy had negatively impacted not only President Biden but also Vice President Kamala Harris.
“The truth is, we had a stale message and outdated models for delivering it. It cost Mr. Biden and, eventually, Vice President Kamala Harris dearly,” she wrote.
In response, White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers told Fox News Digital that Biden’s policies severely harmed the economy. Rogers contrasted this by claiming that Trump remedied these issues by addressing inflation, implementing substantial tax cuts for the middle class, and revitalizing the manufacturing sector.
Jean-Pierre also admitted to underestimating public concern regarding President Biden’s age. Her own press briefings might have exacerbated this issue, igniting further debate.
She pointed to the shifting media landscape, noting that informal and relatable mediums, like social media videos, often gain more traction than official briefings. Jean-Pierre advised Trump’s team to anticipate and prepare for increased scrutiny over the coming years.
She conveyed the difficulty in rebuilding public trust once communication fails to resonate with personal experiences. Jean-Pierre felt this tension in her role at the White House and sees similar issues reoccurring.
Jean-Pierre has documented her experiences in the White House in her 2025 book, “Independent.” Notably, she announced her departure from the Democratic Party, choosing to register as an Independent, marking a significant change in her political affiliation.
