The son of Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Eric Bieniemy has been arrested and charged in connection with a shooting that involved his mother, Mia Bieniemy. This development was reported by authorities in Virginia on Monday.
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office detailed that deputies responded to a shooting report late Sunday in Ashburn, Virginia. Upon arrival, they discovered Mia Bieniemy, aged 57, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was swiftly taken to a hospital, where doctors reported her in stable condition by Monday.
Elijah Zion Bieniemy, aged 27, is the son of Eric and Mia Bieniemy. Authorities arrested him on charges including malicious wounding, using a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm within a residence. He is currently held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.
Eric Bieniemy, who is the offensive coordinator for the Chiefs, was in St. Joseph, Missouri, with the team during Sunday’s practice. He missed Monday’s practice following the incident.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid expressed his support during a practice session on Monday. “Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy and his family,” Reid told reporters. “He’s got a great support group here as a family, as needed. And then we’ll just let time take care of it from there.”
Eric Bieniemy has a noteworthy coaching history. He joined the Chiefs’ staff as the new offensive coordinator after Matt Nagy transitioned to join John Harbaugh and the New York Giants. From 2018 to 2022, under Bieniemy’s leadership, the Chiefs’ offense led the NFL by averaging 30.1 points per game.
Prior to his current role, Eric Bieniemy held important positions with other teams. He served as the running backs coach for the Chicago Bears during the 2025 season. In 2024, he was both the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for the UCLA Bruins. The year before, in 2023, he filled similar roles with the Washington Commanders.
