San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan attended the team’s training camp, marking his first public appearance since a car accident earlier this month that left him with several injuries. Shanahan was seen alongside 49ers general manager John Lynch at the practice field, observing from the center behind the defense, according to a report by Matt Barrows from The Athletic.
Shanahan sported sunglasses and a soft cast on his left hand. His facial swelling seemed to have reduced since the crash. Players including Kyle Juszczyk, Fred Warner, and Dre Greenlaw greeted him during his brief appearance at the camp.
“The 49ers initially reported Shanahan’s accident last Saturday, noting he suffered ‘non-life-threatening injuries’. This situation has restricted his role during the training camp.”
The injuries Shanahan sustained in the crash included a broken nose, three broken ribs, and a broken hand. He required more than 40 stitches on his face and suffered a significant concussion. The accident occurred on July 14 near his home in northern California.
As Shanahan recovers, assistant head coach Chris Foerster, aged 64, has stepped in to manage some of Shanahan’s responsibilities. Lynch mentioned that covering for Shanahan would require a collaborative effort from the team’s staff.
In the previous season, Shanahan led the 49ers to a 12-5 record, earning a spot in the NFL Playoffs. The team triumphed over the Philadelphia Eagles but was eventually defeated by the Seattle Seahawks, who won the Super Bowl.
Heading into the new season, the 49ers rank among the top 10 or 11 teams in odds to win the 2027 Super Bowl. They have made a significant acquisition by signing Pro Bowl wide receiver Mike Evans during the offseason, who is expected to enhance the performance of fourth-year quarterback Brock Purdy.
The 49ers will start their preseason on August 13 at home against the Tennessee Titans. Foerster might assume the acting head coach role for the game if Shanahan remains under concussion protocol. However, Shanahan is anticipated to return for the season opener against the Los Angeles Rams on September 10 in Melbourne, Australia.
