Justice Department Investigates Beef Price Surge

The Justice Department is investigating major U.S. retailers over rising beef prices as part of the Trump administration’s efforts to reduce the cost of an essential grocery item. The Antitrust Division announced an expansion of its ongoing investigation into beef costs, which have increased by about 10% over the past year. This scrutiny now includes eight American chains.

Associate Attorney General Stanley E. Woodward Jr. has addressed letters to Kroger, Publix, Walmart, Albertsons, Aldi, Ahold Delhaize USA, Costco, and Amazon. The Justice Department’s concern focuses on the recent retail price increases for beef. They emphasized that beef prices are a significant issue for Americans and a current priority for the department.

The announcement aligns with the department’s earlier antitrust investigation targeting America’s “big four” meatpackers. President Donald Trump had accused them of collusion, price fixing, and price manipulation in the previous year.

These efforts are part of the administration’s broader attempts to decrease costs. On September 1, a new plan came into effect allowing 300,000 metric tons of beef from designated countries to enter the U.S. without tariffs. The president believes this measure will significantly lower costs, though it has faced opposition from ranchers and politicians in U.S. farming regions.

This story is evolving with more details forthcoming.
