Judge Criticizes Trump Lawsuit Over Tax Returns

President Donald Trump’s lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service was sharply criticized by a judge on Monday. The lawsuit aimed to address his leaked tax returns, but U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams deemed it filed for an ‘improper purpose’. The judge also referred one of Trump’s lawyers for discipline and described the $10 billion lawsuit as self-serving.

Judge Williams accused Trump of manipulating the court system. Trump’s lawsuit targeted a federal agency under his command. This action sidestepped the requirement that parties in a legal case must have opposing interests. It also set the stage for a settlement granting Trump immunity from tax audits and establishing a fund for his allies claiming unjust persecution.

The ruling’s impacts may be limited, especially since the administration publicly stated the $1.776 billion Anti-Weaponization Fund is abandoned. However, the judge’s decision provides a significant criticism of the Trump administration. It also draws attention to a politically sensitive issue for Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, who faces the Senate Judiciary Committee for his confirmation hearing soon.

Judge Williams wrote that the lawsuit and conduct of those involved suggested an attempt to legitimize an agreement to provide immunity and allocate taxpayer funds to grievances not recognized by law. She emphasized that the courts must adhere to constitutional purposes. Williams stated that everyone involved in a civil suit, including the President, must follow the rules.

In her ruling, Williams referenced Blanche’s testimony to Congress in June. Blanche admitted that the ‘anti-weaponization’ fund was halted amid strong bipartisan criticism. Though unfiled in court, Blanche’s testimony showed his belief in speaking for both sides, which the judge found concerning.

The judge noted that Blanche’s ability to speak for both Plaintiffs and Defendants, sign a settlement, and later reject parts of it suggested a lack of genuine representation for both sides in the case.
