Jon Favreau’s Journey with ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’

On May 17, 2026, excitement is building in Hollywood as the latest ‘Star Wars’ film, ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu,’ is set to premiere. At a warehouse filled with ‘Star Wars’ props and costumes, Grogu, affectionately known as Baby Yoda, stands by an Anzellan ship. Director Jon Favreau discusses Grogu’s unique design, emphasizing the ‘Star Wars cute’ aesthetic with quirky features like sharp teeth and wrinkled skin.

Favreau has played a significant role in the ‘Star Wars’ universe. In 2019, he created ‘The Mandalorian,’ a Disney+ series that introduces a bounty hunter and the powerful alien Grogu. Now, the story expands to theaters with a new film.

Grogu’s popularity was unexpected. Favreau recalls being amazed by the character’s rapid rise to fame, especially seeing a Grogu balloon at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, which highlighted the character’s cultural impact.

“We didn’t realize quite what a phenomenon Grogu would become,” Favreau shared.

Favreau’s journey into filmmaking was far from straightforward. Growing up in Queens, Hollywood seemed distant. Favreau didn’t initially see acting as a possibility, but family inspiration led him to pursue a career driven by passion.

He started with improv classes in Chicago and landed a role in ‘Rudy.’ Roles were scarce, however, leading him to write his screenplay, ‘Swingers,’ based on his experiences as an out-of-work actor in Hollywood. This opened new opportunities, including directing.

His directorial work includes ‘Elf,’ a holiday classic starring Will Ferrell, and ‘Iron Man,’ launching the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Favreau attributes his success to infusing spontaneity and human connection into effects-driven films.

Discussing ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu,’ Favreau highlights its father-son theme, central to many ‘Star Wars’ stories. This theme of chosen family resonates with audiences and connects deeply with the broad ‘Star Wars’ narrative.

Favreau cherishes his childhood memories of watching the original ‘Star Wars’ with family. Now, as he introduces a new chapter to today’s audiences, he feels honored to bring families together with this film.
