Former First Lady Jill Biden participated in a conversation with Whoopi Goldberg in June. They discussed Jill Biden’s memoir, “A View from the East Wing,” among other topics at the 92nd Street Y event in New York City. The focus included her thoughts on media portrayal during President Joe Biden’s administration.
Goldberg questioned whether Jill believed the media coverage of President Biden’s four-year term was fair. Jill Biden seemed unsure and responded, “You know, I think probably, well, I mean, seeing how things are now, I don’t know. I don’t know. I’d have to think about that.”
“Maybe we could have done more to reach out to the press to be more open so that they understood us as real people and not sort of these figureheads,”Jill Biden commented. She expressed a regret that stronger ties with the media could have been established during the administration.
Jill Biden further mentioned a perceived “double standard” in how the media covered the Biden and Trump administrations. She highlighted, “If Joe would have done any one of the things that are occurring now, I mean he would have been excoriated.”
This statement was met with agreement from Goldberg, who chuckled in response.
Additionally, Jill Biden addressed criticism from within the Democratic Party regarding her memoir, specifically a comment by Andrew Bates, a former spokesman for the Biden White House. Bates had criticized the timing of the book, suggesting that it needlessly revisited controversies from the 2024 election. Jill Biden invited Bates to discuss his concerns directly, asserting that her memoir mainly covered non-political themes.
