In recent developments, Jennifer Balkcom, a North Carolina state representative, has been announced as the new Republican nominee for the state’s 11th Congressional District. This follows incumbent Congressman Chuck Edwards’ decision not to pursue re-election last week.
The North Carolina Republican Party’s 11th Congressional District Executive Committee selected Balkcom on Monday. Notably, both U.S. Senator Ted Budd and U.S. Representative Greg Murphy from North Carolina have publicly endorsed Balkcom in her electoral bid.
“I’m blessed to receive the Republican nomination for the 11th Congressional District,” Balkcom stated. She expressed concern over the Democratic Party’s shift towards extremism. “We’re witnessing extremism across the nation as radical socialists nominate candidates seeking higher taxes, open borders, and a change to our way of life. It’s crucial to halt this agenda starting here in the 11th District,” she emphasized.
In the upcoming general election, Balkcom will compete against Democratic challenger Jamie Ager.
North Carolina Republican Party executive director Zach Almond expressed satisfaction with Balkcom’s nomination. He remarked, “Jennifer has Western North Carolina values.” Highlighting her background in agriculture, banking, and finance, Almond noted she would “serve as a valuable asset for Western North Carolinians in Congress.”
Chuck Edwards, who secured a decisive victory in the GOP primary for North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District earlier this year, recently announced his withdrawal from the re-election campaign. In a social media post, he mentioned, “After much prayer and reflection, I’ve decided to withdraw from my re-election campaign. I will complete my current term. Serving Western North Carolina has been the honor of my life. Thank you for your trust, prayers, and support. God bless WNC and America.”
Edwards made this announcement following a report from the House Committee on Ethics, recommending censure. The committee concluded he engaged in inappropriate conduct towards two young female staffers.
The report indicated that despite Edwards’ denial of any inappropriate intentions, his conduct could be interpreted as such. This included giving the young women frequent gifts, commenting on their appearance, inviting them to intimate settings, and expressing ‘effusive affection’ through notes and invitations.
