Jay Feely’s Journey from NFL to Political Arena

Jay Feely’s Political Ambitions

Jay Feely, known for his career as a placekicker in the NFL and later as a CBS sports broadcaster, has always entertained the thought of entering politics. His outspoken nature on political matters and his service on the NFL Players Association’s executive committee laid a foundation for his political interests. However, it was a significant incident that propelled him into public service aspirations. Feely decided to step into the political spotlight after President Trump survived an assassination attempt during a campaign stop in Butler, Pennsylvania.

“That was a big moment for me. I started asking myself, ‘All right, Jay… What are you willing to sacrifice?’ It’s my time to go and serve,” Feely said in an interview with The Hill.

Feely’s Political Journey

With his wife’s support, Feely embarked on this new path after years of contemplation. He had accumulated substantial wealth from his football and broadcasting careers, enjoying a stable job with CBS at the time. Despite this, he felt the call to serve, motivated by the desire to contribute to the community through politics.

Feely is now running for Congress as a Republican candidate in Arizona’s 1st Congressional District. He hopes to replace Rep. Andy Biggs, who is pursuing a gubernatorial run. President Trump’s endorsement earlier this year boosted Feely, helping him secure a primary victory. He faces off against Democrat Amish Shah, notable for being a team doctor for the New York Jets during Feely’s tenure.

A Unique Connection in the Race

Feely discovered an unexpected connection with Shah, realizing that Shah was affiliated with the New York Jets while he played for the team. He reflected on their differing viewpoints and the upcoming electoral race, stating,

“I certainly respect the fact he’s an ER doctor and cares for people. Our policies just completely disagree with each other. And that’s what this election is going to come down to: policies.”

Role of Sports in Feely’s Political Outlook

Feely attributes his understanding of diverse perspectives to his time in NFL locker rooms. He recounted engaging discussions with teammates about politics and life, emphasizing the importance of connecting with people from different backgrounds. This experience, according to Feely, prepared him for political debates.

“That’s the greatest thing about being an athlete, being with people who come from completely different worlds than you,” he said.

Feely advocates for athletes transitioning to politics, suggesting that their resilience in sports prepares them for political challenges.

Broader Context: Sports and Politics

Feely believes the intersection of sports and politics in the U.S. is crucial. He expressed willingness to engage with the NFL on broadcasting practices under scrutiny in Washington, D.C. Critically, he offers his views on college sports, particularly the regulation of name, image, and likeness licensing, proposing a collective bargaining agreement similar to the NFL’s.

“Whatever answer you have… you have to protect women’s and Olympic sports, too,” Feely said.

Feely envisions his potential Congressional role as one focused on service rather than personal gain, emphasizing the importance of successful individuals entering public service.
