James Sapp Jr.’s Journey in Football

James Sapp Jr. is making significant strides in football for Yorkville, despite getting a late start. Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 240 pounds, this senior tackle, also a three-sport athlete, has become an essential part of the Foxes’ defensive line.

Sapp shared, “I can play any position on the line, but I’m mainly at tackle because of my size. I have played some defensive end. I may prefer that because I enjoy one-on-one matchups.” Sapp began playing football in eighth grade after moving from Chicago when he was three. His parents were initially unaware of the local youth tackle program.

In addition to football, Sapp participates in basketball and track, with achievements in throwing events. He reached the state level in discus last spring. Sapp prioritized his sports, stating, “Football is No. 1, track No. 2, then basketball.”

Sapp excelled in a recent game, contributing to 13 tackles, including four for loss and a sack, although Yorkville lost 44-21 to Oswego. He has accumulated 35 tackles this season. Yorkville coach Dan McGuire praised Sapp’s athleticism and noted his contributions as a tight end. “His blocking enhances our run game,” McGuire said.

Despite not yet catching a pass, both coach and player remain optimistic. “I’m gonna get there,” Sapp said.

Sapp’s defensive abilities shone with 48 tackles last season, with potential for growth depending on Yorkville’s playoff success. They are set to face Plainfield East, Oswego East, and Plainfield North.

Assistant coach Todd Groth highlighted Sapp’s development, attributing his progress to being a three-sport athlete. “His technique and power are improving,” Groth noted. Sapp’s physical strength, shown by a 550-pound deadlift personal best, underlines his commitment to daily improvement.

Academically strong with a 4.33 GPA, Sapp has NCAA Division II and III offers. He aspires to earn a college scholarship and aims for the NFL. “Getting to college is my goal,” he said, considering construction management as a backup.
