James Braid has played a crucial role in shaping American history over the last two years. Although not widely known, his impact is felt across Washington, D.C. Braid’s height of 6 feet, 6 inches made him physically prominent during his time at the White House and Capitol Hill, where he advanced President Donald Trump’s legislative agenda.
Braid’s achievements include rolling back policies from the Biden era and pushing Trump’s tax policy bill to completion. Up until his last day as director of the Office of Legislative Affairs on Tuesday, he excelled in his role. He described the job to Fox News Digital as maintaining “cautious optimism in the face of all odds.” Serving as Trump’s advisor on Capitol Hill wasn’t easy, especially given Trump’s tendency to personally address lawmakers who opposed him. Trump once publicly shared Sen. Tom Cotton’s phone number due to Cotton’s opposition to a daylight saving time bill.
“Trump’s skills in engaging others allowed for disagreements to resolve,” said Braid. “His ability to have a tough conversation one day and golf the next was remarkable.”
While some Republicans struggled with Trump, Sen. Mitch McConnell among them, Braid emphasized the importance of honesty with lawmakers. “We’ve managed to be honest brokers, delivering for many members in various ways,” he shared.
Trump’s influence remains strong in Congress, even in absentia. An administration official explained that only Trump truly represents himself, noting his hands-on approach at critical legislative points. Braid detailed how Trump monitored vote outcomes, recognizing that Republicans typically aligned with him.
Despite facing challenges, Braid succeeded with the Big, Beautiful Bill—a significant tax and policy package. Braid recalled a tense moment at Sterling Golf Club in Virginia with Senate Republicans during negotiations over the bill. The meeting included Sen. Rand Paul, Sen. Ron Johnson, Sen. Rick Scott, alongside Trump, the Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought, and deputy chief of staff James Blair.
He recounted, “The table held heaps of food, yet no one ate. We debated the funding strategy for hours.”
The bill eventually passed, thanks to administration officials and congressional leaders. Braid credited the unwavering commitment across the Republican leadership for its success.
On the day Trump signed the bill, Braid described his best day at work. “Watching the president sign the historic legislation on July 4th with my son was unforgettable,” he said.
Braid is recognized by GOP leaders as essential to achieving their legislative goals. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer appreciated Braid as a “total pro” who understood the House Republican Conference dynamics. Senate Majority Leader John Thune valued Braid as a “tremendous partner,” while Vought praised him as a “lion for the president.” Vice President JD Vance, who previously hired Braid, commended his brilliance and effectiveness.
Now that Braid is leaving, he aims to explore opportunities outside government. His former deputy, Katie Bailey, assumes his position. Braid advised Bailey to focus ruthlessly on priorities and remain optimistic during challenging times.
