Junior running back Aiden Brunner understood the necessity of waiting his turn at Jacobs. Under coach Brian Zimmerman, the team is renowned for its running game, making the starting lineup a challenge to enter, especially in a lead role for the Golden Eagles. “I knew coming in I wasn’t going to play right away,” Brunner stated, emphasizing the need for patience and development. His discussions with coach ‘Zim’ reinforced this understanding. Now, Brunner seized his opportunity.
On Friday night, Brunner participated in one of the most thrilling comebacks in the area. He scored two crucial touchdowns in the second half, including the deciding score with merely 1.8 seconds left. Jacobs overcame a 17-point shortage to secure a 31-27 Fox Valley Conference triumph at Burlington Central. Brunner accumulated 38 yards over 11 carries for Jacobs (4-0), with touchdowns from 1 and 8 yards.
Austin Stennett led the resurgence by completing 19 of 31 passes, accumulating 263 yards. He achieved a 74-yard touchdown with Owen Crouch, who concluded with five receptions for 111 yards. Chris Williams added seven catches for 59 yards and scored on an 8-yard reverse touchdown. Jordan Hudson also acquired five catches totaling 75 yards.
Reece Beemer spearheaded Burlington Central’s (2-2) efforts with 14 completions out of 30 passes for 112 yards and one touchdown. His 10-yard touchdown run with 1:06 left in the fourth quarter gave the Rockets a temporary 27-24 advantage. Meanwhile, Parker Auxier ran for 126 yards securing two touchdowns over 24 carries.
The Golden Eagles’ running game hasn’t been as effective this season compared to previous years, with Stennett’s quarterback growth filling the gap. Zimmerman appreciated Brunner’s second-half progress. “He’s been waiting in the wings,” Zimmerman expressed, acknowledging Brunner’s time to lead. Despite the team’s dissatisfaction with their running game, Zimmerman highlighted Stennett’s significant contributions.
After Burlington Central seized a 27-24 lead with a 13-play, 68-yard drive, Jacobs rallied once more. Stennett positioned the team for Brunner, who then completed the decisive touchdown. “We knew we had the power, so we ran it strong,” Brunner recounted. “The gap opened perfectly; it felt incredible.”
Years of development have been beneficial for Brunner, allowing him to showcase his hard work. The Rockets initially led 20-3 after Beemer’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Chace Chesney in the third quarter. Jacobs quickly responded with Stennett’s spectacular 74-yard touchdown pass to Crouch.
Following a fourth down stop, Jacobs marched 71 yards in five plays, concluding with Brunner’s impressive 8-yard touchdown run, reducing the deficit to 20-17. After another defensive stop, Williams’ 8-yard touchdown provided Jacobs with a 24-20 lead.
Burlington Central coach Brian Iossi commented, “We missed scoring three times inside the 20-yard line in the second quarter. That cost us the game, yet I’m proud of their efforts.” He praised the game as potentially one of the finest in the state.
Jacobs’ coaches predicted the significance of this matchup. “This is a game you’ll remember forever,” Brunner declared. The game indeed left a lasting impression. “I’ve never experienced anything like that,” he admitted.
