The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington D.C. faces challenges following its renovation. A sudden bloom of algae has emerged, complicating the pool’s recently completed update. The $14 million project resulted in a blue-painted floor, described by President Trump as ‘American flag blue.’
However, the paint began peeling off the pool’s floor, attracting tourists for an unexpected reason. David Carter Hearn, a 67-year-old cyclist and three-time Olympic canoeist, was accused of vandalism. He allegedly touched a piece of the peeling blue paint combined with algae. The U.S. Park Police arrested Hearn, charging him with destroying government property, which risks a sentence of up to ten years.
Hearn insists he was merely a curious citizen at the site. ‘I was just a curious, concerned citizen,’ he remarked in an interview, noting unfortunate timing during his visit.
President Trump announced on social media that multiple arrests occurred over the pool’s vandalism. He mentioned the renovation problems were severe enough that draining the pool might be necessary for repairs. Additionally, unsubstantiated claims were made about vandals pouring harmful chemicals into the pool. The administration hasn’t disclosed other accused individuals.
