Iowa Senate Candidate Comments on U.S.-Iran Conflict

Rep. Ashley Hinson, a Republican candidate for the Iowa Senate, expressed concerns about the potential political ramifications of the U.S. conflict with Iran if it continues beyond the next few weeks. During a campaign event in Fort Dodge, Iowa, on May 28, Hinson privately discussed these concerns with a voter, as reported by CBS News through obtained audio of the exchange.

The conversation, which was initially reported by Politico, highlights Hinson’s worries about the conflict and the possibility of a military draft. Hinson mentioned that the conflict becoming prolonged poses a political risk, especially as Iowa has lost soldiers in the ongoing war.

I do hope we can get this done by the next couple of weeks. If it drags on beyond that, it’s a political liability for us too. Because we’ve lost Iowa soldiers,” Hinson stated in the audio.

Hinson, who has attended four military funerals since December, emphasized the somber impact of these deaths. She deferred to President Trump and his foreign policy team concerning the conflict, noting their efforts to reach an agreement with Iran to extend the ceasefire and discuss Iran’s nuclear ambitions. The countries entered a ceasefire in April, but sporadic clashes and disruptions in oil shipping through the Strait of Hormuz continue.

Obviously I was deferring to the President on the negotiations, because he has the team doing it,” Hinson said, reiterating that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons is her primary concern.

Regarding the possibility of a military draft, Hinson stated she is unaware of any plans. The White House had previously declared no draft was intended.

We don’t need one. I hope we don’t need one,” Hinson commented.

Despite the political and personal challenges, Hinson noted that the families of fallen Iowa soldiers remain committed to seeing the conflict resolved.

Those families all said we need to finish the job,” she shared. “Even in their grief.

Hinson is set to compete against Democratic nominee Josh Turek in November for the Iowa Senate seat, which will be vacated by Republican Sen. Joni Ernst, who is not seeking re-election. This race is considered pivotal for controlling the Senate in 2026.

A spokesperson for Hinson remarked to CBS News that ongoing wars are unpopular and stressed that President Trump is working to prevent prolonged conflict while ensuring American safety.
