Federal investigators are in South Florida to investigate a fatal incident at Miami International Airport involving an Amazon cargo plane. The crash occurred on Sunday afternoon and resulted in multiple casualties.
Witness Accounts
People who were near the scene have begun sharing their experiences. Grace Mercado was traveling in a vehicle when her partner remarked on an unusual noise. She recalled, “We hear a noise. And he goes, ‘Oh my goodness. Is that a plane crash?'” Looking up, Mercado observed the plane had overshot the runway, crossing a street before stopping. “It was extremely loud,” Mercado described. “It was like a shake. Honestly, I can’t compare it to anything else.”
She struggled to comprehend the scene, saying, “The plane was up in smoke. It was just like something from a movie. It was crazy.”
Emergency Response
Initially, no first responders were present at the crash site. However, response teams arrived within minutes. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue mobilized over 60 units and approximately 200 personnel, reaching the scene almost immediately. Tragically, the crash claimed five lives and injured five others.
“Our hearts are with the victims and their families following Sunday’s tragic cargo plane crash,” stated Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and are keeping everyone who was injured in our thoughts and prayers.”
Mercado noted the surreal nature of the event, commenting, “It’s something you don’t see in real life. So, it’s surreal.”
Ongoing Investigation
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the reasons why the plane failed to stop on the runway. So far, the identities of the victims have not been disclosed.
