Innovative Strategy Helps Angler Succeed at Bassmaster Elite Qualifier

Kaden Buchmann emerged victorious at the Bassmaster Elite Qualifier held at Norfork Lake in Arkansas. He completed the three-day tournament with a total catch of 42 pounds, 7 ounces, securing the first place.

The rules of the event, one of three Elite Qualifiers, did not allow the use of forward-facing sonar. This pushed Buchmann to rely on unconventional tactics in a bid to secure his victory. His creative solution involved observing the local wildlife, specifically deer, to gauge areas less frequented by competing anglers.

Buchmann noticed that if deer were present along the shoreline, that section of the lake had likely not been disturbed by other anglers. He explained, “If I saw 15 deer in a pocket, I’d say, ‘I’m getting bit here.’” His approach bore fruit as he observed over 30 deer on the opening day, helping him amass 16 pounds, 7 ounces of bass that day, which placed him in the lead.

This unusual method proved effective once more on the second day when he continued seeking deer and caught quality bass in areas where deer were spotted. Despite this unconventional focus, Buchmann credited not just this tactic but also his speed, mental fortitude, and strategy to keep distance from the competition. He extensively covered the lake, employing high-speed trolling and targeting various locations, such as docks and shaded shorelines.

In a show of impressive skill and endurance, Buchmann operated all over Norfork Lake, from areas close to Missouri to locations near the Norfork Dam. By the final day, his efforts rewarded him with a 12-pound addition to his total, culminating in a narrow victory over runner-up Cody Stahl by 1 pound, 14 ounces. This win garnered Buchmann a prize of $71,317 and an invitation to the 2027 Bassmaster Classic at Lake Hartwell.

Buchmann’s unique deer-scoping strategy might inspire other anglers to adapt similar approaches. With two more Elite Qualifiers on the horizon, many may find themselves scanning shorelines for more than fish in future competitions.
