Humane Indiana’s Summer Pet Camp Offers Kids Educational Experiences

Summer camps provide various options for kids, and Humane Indiana has its unique way of engaging them. The nonprofit organization hosts sessions where children can spend meaningful time indoors with animals. During a recent Pet Camp, Zelda Rutherford from Hammond and Lindsey Stirn, the Shelter Services Liaison, bonded with three-month-old puppy Freddie.

Humane Indiana held Pet Care Week, attracting around a dozen youngsters eager to learn about pet ownership. Attendees also learned about the shelter’s mission. Hayes Rooney, 10, expressed her enthusiasm for getting a dog when she’s 12, crediting the camp for teaching her essential knowledge.

“This is my third time attending the camp. I want to be prepared for when I get my new dog,” Rooney shared, highlighting how previous visits educated her on the shelter’s operations and the roles its staff plays.

Among the playful interactions was puppy Alvin, delighting campers with its antics. Present were Zelda Rutherford, Hayes Rooney, Andrew Sickles, Betty Musgrove, and Ashlynn Dean. Rooney noted the shelter’s reliance on donations, with her family contributing support. Stirn reinforced this message, emphasizing children’s role as advocates for animals.

Stirn initiated the camp with a discussion on pet ownership responsibilities, explaining the importance of shelter functions, layouts, and department duties. Following this, campers engaged with shelter pets in a controlled play circle, enjoying the feisty nature of the puppies.

Returning camper Eli DeYoung from Lansing mentioned enjoying the camp previously and wanting to learn more. The day’s events included a comprehensive tour of the shelter, providing insight into staff interactions and care duties. Humane Indiana accommodates about 70 cats and dogs, with additional animals in foster care.
