How to Bet on the NBA Finals MVP Market

Betting on the NBA Playoffs can be challenging, especially when predictions don’t pan out as expected. Although I didn’t perform terribly, missing a max playoff bet for the first time since publicly sharing my picks was disappointing. I initially predicted a Knicks vs. Thunder Finals matchup, but my picks often missed the mark in the last round. As we approach the NBA Finals, I hope to improve my performance.

Understanding the Favorites

Each team’s top players significantly influence the Finals MVP market. Victor Wembanyama is considered the standout player of this series. His future in the league appears promising, with some labeling him a potential all-time great if he secures a championship. However, betting on him as the Finals MVP at -185 odds isn’t wise since the Spurs are at -205 to win the series. This bet requires both a Spurs win and Wembanyama being the best player, and the savings are minimal.

On the flip side, betting on Jalen Brunson for Finals MVP offers potentially better value. The Knicks have been formidable in the playoffs. They haven’t faced many intense adversaries, so they’re well-rested and have depth. San Antonio won’t have an easy victory. Although Brunson isn’t at Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s level, if the Knicks win, Brunson’s performance will be a key factor.

Evaluating Value Options

Several players from both teams could potentially win the Finals MVP. Here’s a look at some candidates and how they might achieve the award:

  • Karl-Anthony Towns: Towns faces the task of defending Wembanyama. While he may not shut him down, if Towns can stretch the floor, score over 20 points per game, and limit Wembanyama’s scoring, he stands a chance. However, this scenario seems unlikely.
  • Stephon Castle: At +5000, Castle offers an interesting option. He struggled with turnovers in the Western Conference Finals but played strong defense. If he can restrict Brunson’s performance and the Spurs win decisively, he might be considered, especially if Wembanyama doesn’t dominate.
  • OG Anunoby: Available at +6000, Anunoby has been a reliable scorer for the Knicks. If he continues this in the Finals and Brunson draws attention, Anunoby could become a top scorer, boosting his MVP chances.
  • Josh Hart: Though priced at +15000, Hart’s versatility could make him a contender. His ability to impact the game in multiple ways may benefit the Knicks. Despite Brunson’s tendency to dominate the ball, Hart could still manage notable performances, including triple-doubles.

Strategies for NBA Finals MVP Betting

While I won’t bet heavily on the NBA Finals MVP, the favorite remains Wembanyama, with Brunson close behind. Consider this market similar to purchasing a lottery ticket. The Knicks could win the series, so the value lies in betting on Anunoby, Hart, and Castle. I suggest allocating a half unit on Brunson, with the other half divided among the remaining three players.
