About 25 years ago, Jake Berry was a college freshman when he received distressing news. His long-time friend, Jack, had been rushed to the hospital, though the reasons were initially unclear. “This was in the early days of texting,” Berry mentioned, highlighting his reliance on phone calls to get updates about Jack’s health condition.
It was a Thursday night, often a time for socializing with friends. However, the news left Berry disinclined to engage in usual activities. “I just needed some time on my own to try and clear my head and find out more about what was going on,” he recalled. He stayed in his dorm room, enduring what felt to him like one of the loneliest nights.
Later that evening, Jess, a friend, stopped by to check on him. With Jess were two friends visiting for the weekend, named Kim and Corey. Upon learning about Berry’s distressing situation, Kim and Corey quickly decided to help.
They promptly left, retrieved their car, and returned to drive Berry back to his hometown, about an hour’s distance. “They dropped me off at a friend’s house where others had gathered. I was able to spend the night with them, sharing my feelings,” Berry shared.
Jack was later diagnosed with lymphoma and passed away about a year after. Despite Jack’s passing, the community around him created lasting bonds. “Those friends that I gathered with that night, now they’re my brothers. We’ve navigated life’s ups and downs together. Many of us have ended up back in the town where we grew up, raising our children together,” Berry explained.
Berry reflects often on how significant that night was and expresses gratitude to Kim, Corey, and Jess for their kindness. Though he lost touch with Kim and Corey, the impact they had remains significant in his life. “I hope their generosity was rewarded tenfold,” he said.
