Hobart Junior Miles White’s Growth and Influence

Miles White, a junior at Hobart, has learned to control his emotions, especially when they interfere with his performance. This discipline helps him better use his talent, making him a more complete player. “I’m way more mature than I was last year,” White stated. “Last year, I was more kid-ish. I was more aggressive. But I’m more mellow now.”

Despite his mellow demeanor, White remains impactful on the field. Standing 6-foot-4 and weighing 220 pounds, he plays as a hybrid linebacker/safety and running back. Before facing Kankakee Valley, White registered 19 tackles, five for a loss, and ran for 180 yards with four touchdowns in 27 carries for the Brickies. Last season, he made 69 tackles, including seven for a loss, and added an interception and a fumble recovery. Offensively, he rushed for 194 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries.

“He’s grown a lot,” Hobart coach Eric Schreiber Jr. observed. “Maturity-wise, he’s come a long way from his freshman year to his junior year. He has more on his plate now this season, and he’s handling it really well.”

White is versatile, able to play in the box, blitz, drop into coverage, and run with physicality. He possesses the speed to take the ball the distance. Coach Schreiber acknowledged, “It’s really just what kind of load he can carry because obviously he rarely comes off the field.” White prefers to stay on the defensive, “I like hitting people,” he shared. “I like being the person who decides how the game’s going to go.”

White’s influence on the Brickies has increased, noted by their No. 6 rank in the Class 4A state coaches poll. “This year, I feel like I got better with my team,” White remarked. “Last year, I feel like I kept to myself a little bit. But I’m expanding and getting more with the team.”

Senior linebacker Vontrell Jones has noticed White’s impact. “Miles is a great guy and a key piece of the team,” Jones said. “He’s always been an energy guy. In practice, if the guys feel slow, I look to Miles to get the vibes flowing.”

The Brickies hope to extend their season into the fall. Last year, they claimed their first sectional title since 2020. “This year, everybody’s more put together,” White explained. “Everybody feels like we’re together like a family. We’re more confident, more prepared. We just know what we really want to do.”

Aside from football, White also plays basketball and volleyball. He averages 4.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per game in basketball and has started for much of his two seasons. However, football is where he aims for college success. He plans to visit Iowa State and has recently visited Louisville. As Coach Schreiber suggests, White’s potential is vast if he focuses on his physical and academic preparation.
