Madonna’s Return to the VMAs

Madonna electrified the audience with high-energy performances, marking her first appearance in over two decades. Joined by Sabrina Carpenter, they opened with “Bring Your Love,” which later earned the Best Collaboration award. The show included distinctly striking imagery from Madonna’s recent album, “Confessions II,” using green lasers and a multitude of cameras. Following this, she performed “Danceteria” alongside Charli XCX, who appeared with other full music video cast members, such as Debi Mazar and Julia Garner.

Country music star Kacey Musgraves dedicated a heartfelt tribute to Dolly Parton, following a memorial video for the late icon. Musgraves performed “I Will Always Love You,” a song originally released by Parton in 1974 and later by Whitney Houston. Parton passed away last month following a battle with cancer.

LISA Debuts “SaWaDiKa”

K-Pop sensation LISA showcased her new single “SaWaDiKa” on television for the first time at the VMAs. Her performance included riding a Thai tuk-tuk taxi, adding cultural vibrancy to the spectacle. Earlier, LISA won the Best Pop award for her song “Dream,” featuring Kentaro Sakaguchi.

Nirvana Receives Video Vanguard Award

The iconic grunge band Nirvana’s surviving members—Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear—accepted the Video Vanguard award, honoring their significant contributions to music video artistry. A tribute ran with footage of the late Kurt Cobain discussing the creation of memorable videos like “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Come As You Are,” and “Heart-Shaped Box.”

Taylor Swift Makes History

Nominated in 11 categories, Swift becomes the most-awarded artist, eclipsing Beyoncé’s record of 30 Moon Persons as of 2024.

The awards were broadcast on CBS stations and MTV, with streaming available on Paramount+. Notably, the show featured exclusive previews, including Taylor Swift’s “Patient Zero” music video.
