High School Volleyball: Marist’s Sommer Shaw Shines in a Strong Start

Sommer Shaw from Marist High School enjoys running with her mother, Sharon Wilson, accompanied by their pit bull, Joe, at Commissioners Park in Alsip. The exercise helps Shaw build stamina vital for playing long volleyball matches. Shaw, a junior middle hitter, demonstrated her skills with five kills and three block assists, leading Marist to a decisive 25-13, 25-11 victory over St. Laurence.

Maggie Kurpeikis, committed to Michigan, led Marist with 13 kills and six digs. Western Michigan-bound Taylor Berg contributed six kills and five digs, while Maeve Gill added four kills. Haven Enselman excelled with 26 assists and six digs, and Ariella Link provided 14 digs and four assists.

Marist has maintained dominance, winning all 14 games by an average of 12.6 points. No team has scored more than 18 points against the reigning Class 4A state champions. Shaw expressed satisfaction, saying, “We’re coming on strong and fierce, and we want to win every single match.”

St. Laurence’s Abby Ambrose managed four kills and two block assists, with Clancey Bowen adding three kills and two block assists. The match, the first meeting of the two schools, hosted a sizeable crowd at Marist’s gym.

Sommer Shaw, a newcomer to Marist’s talented lineup, quickly adapted, earning praise for her agility. “She’s a silent killer,” remarked Kurpeikis, highlighting Shaw’s jumping prowess. Coach Jordan Vidovic noted Shaw’s ability as one of their top performers in reaching high balls.

The newly merged GCAC and East Suburban Catholic Conference contains 21 teams in three divisions. The GCAC Red division includes top teams like Marist, Mother McAuley, and Benet. Competing in national tournaments further tests Shaw’s endurance.

Shaw, who began volleyball late, has established herself in the sport after joining through club play in eighth grade. “Some friends told me I should play volleyball,” Shaw recalled. Her involvement in training camps and tournaments led to recognition and an eventual spot in 1st Alliance.

Shaw thrives on the volleyball community. “I love the environment,” she said, appreciating the support from her teammates. Her dedication continues strong.
